Mitchelton Heathcote, Estate Shiraz 2017
Since its establishment in 1969, Mitchelton is focused on crafting wines that have distinct character, allure and speak clearly of its origin. Our goal is to provide a precise translation, while capturing the essence in every bottle. This wine forms part of the Mitchelton ‘Heathcote Luxury’ program. This program allows us to explore the subtle nuances of our Estate vineyard in Heathcote, and gain a deeper understanding of its unique and expressive personality of the region and variety.
COLOUR: Dark Crimson red with purple hues.
NOSE: Intense aromas of fresh mulberries, blackcurrants, dark plums along with charry French oak.
PALATE: A palate revealing complex layers of blood plum, blackberry, liquorice and beautiful oak flavours. Soft and supple fruit tannins are partnered with fine grained French oak, adding palate length and structure to the deep core of concentrated fruit.
VINEYARD: Premium fruit parcels for this Shiraz were carefully selected and handpicked from our Estate vineyard in Heathcote. Located to the north of the Great Dividing Range, the Heathcote region is at elevations between 160m and 380m. The majority of soil under vine is Cambrian – red and deep with excellent water retention. These calcium-rich red soils are prized for their water retention capabilities. While they drain freely, enough water is held in the soil to feed the vine throughout the growing season.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS: The 2017 vintage in Heathcote was characterised by a longer and cooler than average growing season, producing wines with great finesse and structure. A relatively cold winter was followed by a cool and dry spring. The cool, dry and consistent conditions prevailed throughout summer, resulting in a later than average harvest date in March 2017.
WINEMAKING: The grapes were handpicked and fermented in open fermenters after gentle destemming. Carefully hand plunged daily for the duration of primary ferment allowed maximum flavour and tannins to be softly extracted. Upon completion of primary ferment the Shiraz stayed on skins to soften and meld together the fruit characters and tannins. The wine were then pressed off skins and transferred into new and seasoned French oak barriques for malolactic fermentation followed by 24 months of maturation before the final blend was assembled.
