Mitchelton Spring, Single Block Shiraz 2017
Since its establishment in 1969, Mitchelton is focused on crafting wines that have distinct character, allure and speak clearly of its origin. Our goal is to provide a precise translation, while capturing the essence in every bottle. This wine forms part of the Mitchelton ‘Heathcote Luxury’ program. This program has allowed us to explore the subtle nuances of our individual Shiraz blocks at our Toolleen vineyard, and gain a deeper understanding of each block’s unique and expressive personality.
COLOUR: Deep Magenta with purple hues.
NOSE: Lifted perfumed floral and spice notes along with fresh aromas of red and black fruits along with a hint of tar.
PALATE: The wine displays an edgy palate tension revealing multiple layers of blackberry, blood plum, Asian five spice and complex minerality. Plush, powdery fruit tannins dance along the length of the palate and complement the focused, intense fruit with a truly unique nervous energy.
VINEYARD: Premium fruit parcels for this limited release Shiraz were carefully selected and handpicked from the Spring block within our Toolleen vineyard in Heathcote. The Spring block was planted on own roots in 2003 on a section of Tatiarra clay loam with its significant lime and greenstone basalt influence resulting in a wine that introduces its trademark pure fruit aromatics.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS: The 2017 vintage in Heathcote was characterised by a longer and cooler than average growing season, producing wines with great finesse and structure. A relatively cold winter was followed by a cool and dry spring. The cool, dry and consistent conditions prevailed throughout summer, resulting in a later than average harvest date in March 2017.
WINEMAKING: The grapes were handpicked and fermented in open fermenters after gentle destemming. Carefully hand plunged daily for the duration of primary ferment allowed maximum flavour and tannins to be softly extracted. Upon completion of primary ferment the Shiraz stayed on skins to soften and meld together the fruit characters and tannins. The wine were then pressed off skins and transferred into seasoned French oak barriques for malolactic fermentation followed by 24 months of maturation before the final blend was assembled.
CELLARING: This wine will continue to improve over the next 15+ years with careful cellaring.
