Deep magenta with purple hues, the 2018 Mitchelton Estate Single Vineyard Shiraz displays intense aromas of red and black fruits and lifted pepper spice. Ripe mulberry, dark cherry and black plum flavours fill a bright and elegant palate. A blanket of fine and ripe grape tannins support these fruit flavours and are complimented by beautiful French oak influence, ensuring the wine will continue to improve with further maturation.
VINTAGE A A dry and relatively warm Spring season leading into harvest was excellent for disease pressure with fresh, clean canopies and well balanced crop levels. Two days of good rains in December was timely and encouraged good healthy canopies and berry development. The intense and freshness of the Shiraz flavours and ripe tannin profile is a hallmark of this standout vintage.
The grapes were handpicked and fermented in open fermenters after gentle destemming. Carefully hand plunged daily for the duration of primary ferment allowed maximum flavour and tannins to be softly extracted. Upon completion of primary ferment the Shiraz stayed on skins to soften and meld together the fruit characters and tannins. The wine was then pressed off skins and transferred into new and seasoned French oak barriques for malolactic fermentation followed by 18 months of maturation before the final blend was assembled.
