Rich straw yellow in colour. Yellow peach, spiced pear and lightly toasted almond elements are followed by citrus blossom and subtle gun flint notes. A powerful and rich palate of yellow peaches, pear and nectarines against a back drop of almond biscuit and nougat with a pithy, textural mouthfeel. Excellent drive and length, with balanced acidity and a persistent finish.
VINTAGE A dry and relatively cool Spring season was excellent for disease pressure with fresh, clean canopies and well balanced crop levels. Good rains in early Summer was timely and encouraged good healthy canopies and berry development. The richness and texture of the Roussanne flavour profile is a hallmark of this vintage.
WINEMAKER COMMENTS Roussanne isn’t an easy grapevine to grow – it can yield poorly and is susceptible to disease. While It may be a challenge it can also be very rewarding. When it’s planted at a good vineyard site with great attention to detail during the growing season and handled with care in the winery it can, produce a distinctive single varietal white wine with richness and power. Individual parcels of Roussanne from our Watson’s Block were handpicked based on flavour ripeness, freshness and style. One batch were pressed direct to 500 litre puncheons, while another were settled keeping some solids for texture and palate weight before being transferred to a mix of new and seasoned barrels. Barrel fermentation over 2 weeks followed with monthly batonnage of the natural yeast lees for a further 9 months to build texture and complexity. The wine was then blended, gently fined and bottled.
Pair this wine with Classic Roast Chicken with bread and butter stuffing and gravy sauce.
