Mitchelton is proud to release the Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi Collection, a selection of premium wines showcasing the work of leading Indigenous artist, Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi.

Situated behind the picturesque Goulburn River precinct near Nagambie, Mitchelton is home to Australia’s largest commercial Aboriginal art gallery, The Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art, which currently features Gabriella’s works.

Gabriella’s paintings have continued to be the most popular at the Gallery, the works are known for their magnificent use of colour and exquisite use of traditional Aboriginal iconography. Gabriella is excited to share her art with as many people as possible, teaching people to understand what we have, where we come from and how all these stories are connected together.

Youthful intense purple red in colour, with vibrant lifted red berry notes, pepper spice, and seamlessly integrated oak. The soft red berry flavours , Christmas pudding and spice carries through on the palate with generous supple mouthfeel. The tannins are fine and talc like with a lovely soft oak balance and length. MY GRANDMOTHER’S COUNTRY

This painting depicts Gabriella Possum’s Grandmother’s country near Napperby, Northern Territory, Australia. A songline passed down to her by her paternal Grandmother, Long Rose Nungala and the other senior women who taught her in her formative years of a place that is to culturally important to the artist and her ancestry that is abundant with vegetation, bush food and water.

This work is an abstract aerial landscape depicting motifs of natural resources such as bush food and sources of water on her country using traditional iconography. Women are shown gathering food, depicted by the “U” shapes throughout the work. Spinifex grasses are scattered through the landscape alongside bush foods and native plants used for bush medicine. Concentric circle symbols identify campfire and ceremony sites  and This painting provides an excellent overview of a culturally important sites where the women gather for ceremony and engage in ritual song and dance.

Lovely Salmon pink in colour, with layered aromas of blueberry, strawberry, and cream. Vibrant and appealing fresh soft red berry fruits. The red berry notes develop intensity on the palate, with the wine being a lovely medium bodied rose. The structure is soft with a lovely fruit sweetness on an extended clean and crisp finish. GRANDMOTHER’S COUNTRY AND SEVEN SISTERS DREAMING

A combination of two dreamings – one viewed from above and the other below. My Grandmother’s Country is a songline passed down to her by her Grandmother who taught her in her formative years of a place that is culturally important to the artist and her ancestry that is abundant with vegetation, bush food and water.

The ancient myth of the Milky Way and the Seven Sisters (Pleiades) is a dreaming inherited by Gabriella from her mother and grandmother and given to Gabriella by her father. This story takes place at ‘twenty mile’ located near Napperby Creek in the Northern Territory. The Seven Sisters travelled over country, until they realised that they were being followed by a man called Wati-Nyiru (who was a Tjakamarra man).

Pale straw in colour with a green tinge looking youthful and fresh, this wine shows classic Yarra Valley regional and varietal aromas of white peach, with subtle elegant French oak interweaved with subtle complex yeast notes. The palate is a sophisticated medium body Chardonnay being a true reflection of the cooler 2020 vintage. The Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2020 features Seven Sisters Dreaming, 2009.

SEVEN SISTERS DREAMING

This is the ancient myth of the Milky Way and the Seven Sisters (Pleiades). This dreaming was inherited by Gabriella from her mother and grandmother and given to Gabriella by her father.

This story takes place at ‘twenty mile’ located near Napperby Creek in the Northern Territory. The Seven Sisters travelled over a vast expanse of country, until they realised that they were being followed by a man called Wati-Nyiru (who was a Tjakamarra man).

With little hope of relief, the seven sisters escaped through a fire at Kurlunyalimpa to the Milky Way where they became the stars of the Pleiades in the Constellation Taurus.  There they are safe and at rest and watch out over all the women on earth. Wati-Nyiru followed them to the heavens, and become the star Orion, unable to get near them as they move across the night sky. Gabriella depicts the cloud formations in front of the Milky Way in the night sky. The seven concentric circles represent the seven sisters while the lone star represents Orion (the Tjakamarra man) reforming the constellation of Pleiades.

This wine has been fermented in this bottle and is therefore turbid in nature as it includes the yeast lees. The wine should be gently mixed prior to serving cold to homogenise these lees through the bottle. Complex aromas of tropical fruits, and the savoury brioche notes of yeast autolysis. The wine is very light in body, a fine mousse, and complex champagne like savoury flavours on the finish. This preservative free wine should be enjoyed youthful and fresh. BUSH TUCKER DREAMING

Bush Tucker dreaming tells the story of Gabriella’s country – depicting a riverbed that is known to have alluvial gold in the sand. Rivers are considered sacred to Aboriginal people, as the water brings an abundance of food to be foraged. Women are shown collecting the bush tucker such as witchetty grubs, goanna, bush berries and bush yams  and gathering around campfires near the riverbed.

The wine is a vibrant youthful medium depth cherry red colour. The wine has restrained savory notes of mushroom and earth, subtle strawberry and spice form oak. The palate is of medium body with elegant cherry notes, soft integrated sweet oak notes, finely textured tannins with good length. Drink now – 2026.
